Key figures from the Dominican Republic\u2019s business community convened with members of the Finance Committee of the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday, 15 October 2024, to express their reservations about articles in the proposed tax reform currently under review, as reported in N Digital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Representatives from various sectors, including manufacturing, construction, tourism, and beverages, met with lawmakers to discuss the potential implications of the government\u2019s proposed tax overhaul. Among those present were Celso Juan Marranzini of the National Business Council (Conep), Julio Virgilio Brache of the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD), and Annerys Mel\u00e9ndez of the Association of Builders and Housing Developers (Acoprovi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chamber of Deputies Speaker Alfredo Pacheco emphasized the importance of the committee\u2019s role in carefully considering all perspectives on the proposed Modernization of Fiscal Bill. In a statement, he underscored the lawmakers\u2019 commitment to a comprehensive and equitable reform process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The presentations were of great interest as each sector has expressed their concerns, allowing legislators to gain a broader view of the initiative,” said Pacheco, as reported in N Digital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Permanent Commission on Finance of the Chamber of Deputies, chaired by Francisco Paulino, will continue its examination of the bill, inviting additional representatives from the productive sectors and holding public hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dominican government recently unveiled a tax reform package aimed at generating an additional RD$122 billion in annual revenue. However, the proposal has faced widespread opposition from various sectors, which argue that the proposed changes would negatively impact their businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Luis Abinader has expressed a preference for a consensus-driven approach to tax reform and has suggested the formation of a dialogue involving government, legislative, and private sector representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
