Former deputy and Minister of Energy and Mines, lawyer Pelegrin Castillo has protested that the Constitutional Court would have cleared the Caribbean waters limits treaty signed by the Ministry of Foreign Relations with the Netherlands on behalf of the islands of Curacao, Bonaire and Aruba. Castillo argues that the country lost the opportunity to sign an agreement similar to that existing for the Mediterranean waters and has relinquished much of would-be rights in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Minister Roberto Martinez has defended the agreement. Pelegrin Castillo said he volunteered his knowlege, but that the Ministry had relied on the consultant Carlos Michelen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement passed in the Constitutional Court with the dissident vote of four of nine judges, and with another judge leaving it up to Congress to decide, as reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement now moves to the National Congress where the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) is majority. It then moves to the Presidency for signing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Minister Roberto Martinez has defended the treaty, arguing that the Dominican Republic gained 11 kms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
