In a ceremony with the participation of President Luis Abinader, the Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex) presented the sixth edition of the Oscar de la Renta Award for Dominican Migrants to Ydanis Rodr\u00edguez. He is renowned for his contributions to education, healthcare, and Dominican cultural preservation in New York City, Rodr\u00edguez\u2019s work has left an indelible mark on the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award jury commended Rodr\u00edguez\u2019s social and altruistic efforts on behalf of Dominicans in the Big Apple, as well as his political contributions. As the first Latino to serve as New York City\u2019s Transportation Commissioner, he has implemented innovative projects that have transformed the city. His dedication to education has opened doors for countless young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before he was named Transportation Commissioner, Rodriguez taught in New York City public schools for more than fifteen years. As a teacher, he co-founded two schools: Gregorio Luperon High School, which supports newly arrived immigrants from Latin America transitioning to the American educational system, as well as the Community Health Academy of the Heights, a school that has served 6th through 12th grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Abinader praised Rodr\u00edguez and all the award recipients, emphasizing the government\u2019s commitment to supporting Dominicans abroad. \u201cThis recognition honors your ability to impact the societies that welcome you while maintaining strong ties to your homeland,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ydanis Rodriguez has been NYC DOT Commissioner since January 2022. He oversees more than 5,500 employees, an annual operating budget of US$1.4 billion, and a 10-year capital budget of $33 billion. Rodriguez is the first Latino to serve in the position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award ceremony highlighted the Dominican diaspora’s contributions to both their adopted countries and their homeland. Rodr\u00edguez expressed gratitude for the honor and pledged to continue his work, donating the accompanying cash prize to the Monumento Viviente Foundation efforts in Santiago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established by decree in 2017, the Oscar de la Renta Award honors Dominican emigrants who have brought prestige to the country through their achievements and contributions to their communities. Inspired by the life and legacy of the renowned fashion designer, the award celebrates excellence, generosity, and social commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
