While the Dominican Republic\u2019s tourism sector is experiencing a robust recovery and contributing significantly to the nation\u2019s economy, the industry is not without its challenges. According to Jackeline Mora, Technical Vice Minister of Tourism, the sector must address several key issues to ensure its continued growth and positive impact on local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a panel during the ElDinero Economic Forum, Mora highlighted three primary challenges facing Dominican tourism. The first is the lack of urban planning in many tourism-dependent communities. This has led to a need for significant investments in sanitation, water treatment, and overall urban organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second challenge is the environmental impact of tourism, particularly the carbon emissions associated with air travel. As the number of tourists increases, so too does the demand for air transportation, contributing to environmental pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third issue identified by Mora is the need to better prepare local communities for tourism development, especially in areas beyond the traditional sun-and-sand destinations. With growing numbers of visitors, these communities require enhanced education and training to prevent overcrowding and maintain their quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these challenges, Mora emphasized the tourism industry\u2019s vital role in driving economic growth in Dominican communities. Luis Molina Mari\u00f1ez, senior vice president of corporate banking at Banco BHD, echoed this sentiment, citing the example of B\u00e1varo-Punta Cana. Once a rural area, this region has transformed into a thriving tourism hub, creating numerous formal and informal jobs and boosting the local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
