The Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex) on Tuesday, 17 December 2024 unveiled a book titled “Dominican Diplomacy in the Face of the Haitian Crisis 2020-2024.” The publication offers a comprehensive overview of the Dominican government’s foreign policy toward Haiti over the past four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book, divided into four chapters, delves into the evolving relationship between the Dominican Republic and Haiti during President Luis Abinader’s administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Minister Roberto \u00c1lvarez, who delivered the keynote address at the book launch, emphasized that the publication provides a deep dive into the bilateral relationship between the two neighboring nations. \u00c1lvarez reiterated the Dominican Republic’s continued commitment to supporting Haiti: “We support the Haitian authorities and the international community in pacifying Haiti,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To achieve this goal, \u00c1lvarez argued that the Multinational Force in Haiti should be strengthened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An\u00edbal de Castro, president of Grupo Diario Libre and a career diplomat, introduced the book, highlighting its significance as an essential reference for understanding critical moments in Dominican-Haitian relations. “United by geography and separated by history, these chapters allow us to appreciate the changes in Dominican diplomacy,” De Castro remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While acknowledging that the crisis in Haiti is not the Dominican Republic’s fault, De Castro pointed out that it has a daily impact on the country. “And, worse yet, it is used against us,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anselmo Mu\u00f1iz, director of Strategic Studies and Analysis at the Ministry of Foreign Relations, explained that the book got its start when Foreign Minister \u00c1lvarez requested a compilation of speeches on Haiti delivered by both the President and himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In doing so, we deemed it opportune to document and structure it into chapters that reflect key moments of our diplomatic strategy, providing the reader with a detailed context and a comprehensive view of the Dominican government’s actions,” Mu\u00f1iz detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dominican government continues to prioritize supporting Haiti and calls for a strengthened international presence in the country. The publication highlights the complex and often challenging relationship between the two neighboring nations. The book is expected to serve as a valuable resource for understanding the historical context of Dominican-Haitian relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
