President Luis Abinader in his 27 February 2025 state of the nation and review of 2024 spoke of advances to improve energy service, so important for development. Abinader said the transformation of the energy matrix is a reality and is constantly expanding. He highlighted that while in 2020, the renewable generation capacity was of 555 megawatts. Today, 2024, it has more than doubled to around 1,396 megawatts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis growth allows us to move towards the goal of sourcing 25% of our energy from clean sources, with the commitment to double the present generation capacity by 2028,\u201d he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abinader spoke of the recent historic milestone whereby in February 2025, more than 50% of the energy in the grid came from renewable sources, demonstrating that the Dominican Republic is progressing towards a sustainable and reliable energy model. \u201cAt the same time, we continue to strengthen generation with an additional 2,179 megawatts of natural gas, ensuring long-term stability and supply,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that of this capacity, 612 megawatts will come online this year with the commissioning of three new plants: SIBA in Boca Chica, adding 68 megawatts to the existing capacity; Energas 4 in San Pedro de Macor\u00eds, with 130 megawatts; and Energ\u00eda 2000 in Manzanillo, with 414 megawatts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also mentioned the government is expanding the transmission and distribution networks with key projects in Pepillo Salcedo, Azua, and Puerto Plata, as well as investments in modernization, smart meters, and combating electrical fraud, ensuring a more efficient supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
