The project seeks to mitigate radio spectrum interference in Dominican border zones caused by Haitian stations through technical enhancements to local broadcasters and the active promotion of Dominican identity and culture.

The Haitian stations reflect the large audience of the large Haitian migrant population in the border provinces. The initiative aims to reinforce national identity and access to local content in the country’s border communities.

During the launch event, Indotel’s president, Guido Gómez Mazara, highlighted that foreign radio stations’ interference on Dominican soil impacts local broadcasters’ operations and poses a threat to the country’s cultural sovereignty and national identity. He noted that recent technical studies reveal that 62% of residents in border provinces express dissatisfaction with the lack of access to national stations.

“This project is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to safeguarding our radioelectric sovereignty and ensuring all communities can access content that reflects their identity and values,” emphasized Gómez Mazara. He added that a new era for border radio is being built, where Dominican culture, history, and traditions will be heard and celebrated with pride.

The plan includes improving the technical operating conditions of local radio stations in provinces such as Montecristi, Dajabón, Elías Piña, Independencia, Santiago Rodríguez, and Pedernales, enhancing the signal strength and clarity of these stations.

Renowned merengue artist Ponchy Familia stated that music not only inspires dance but also fosters national pride, aligning with this project’s goal of promoting Dominican identity through indigenous musical rhythms. He expressed gratitude to Indotel for this initiative, which will protect patriotic values.

With the launch of “Sovereignty 4.0,” the Dominican Republic takes a significant step towards more inclusive and nationally aligned border communication, ensuring that all Dominicans, regardless of their location, can listen to radio stations that promote local music and culture.

Under the slogan “Sonan-DO,” special programming will be introduced, featuring music, news, and entertainment with a Dominican touch. This will include educational capsules on national history presented by historian Iván Gatón and informative content on the economy, society, and public policy, keeping border communities updated and informed.

The Ministry of Culture will also implement an itinerant program with artistic performances, workshops, and training sessions in these regions. Celebrated artists like Pochy Familia and Ramón Orlando will participate in an innovative mobile studio touring the border provinces, showcasing local talent and fostering healthy artistic competition among communities.

The launch event was well-attended, including the National Police Director, Ramón Antonio Guzmán Peralta, senators Dagoberto Rodríguez, Lía Díaz, and Guillermo Lama from Independencia, Azua, and Bohoruco, respectively. The stage featured icons from various Dominican music genres, such as Luis Segura, Ramón Torres, Ramón Orlando, Kinito Méndez, Sexappeal, Silvio Mora, Pavel Núñez, Leonardo Paniagua, and India Canela.

Gómez Mazara was accompanied by Indotel Board members Juan Taveras Hernández, Fausto Rosario, and executive director Julissa Cruz, along with the institution’s directors and collaborators.

Local frequencies serving the community
As part of ensuring effective coverage in the border region, Indotel has identified and authorized strategic frequencies for local radio stations across the border provinces.
