Ligia D\u00edaz, senator for the province of Azua, called on authorities to take urgent action against illegal motorcycle races irregular held on the busy Ban\u00ed-San Cristobal-Santo Domingo highway, warning that the activity poses a serious threat to road safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during a session of the Senate, D\u00edaz described the motorcyclists involved as “a danger” to the many drivers who use the route daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMotorcycle racing is causing serious problems from Ban\u00ed all the way to the 6 de Noviembre [San Cristobal] highway. These riders are not only endangering their own lives but also those of everyone traveling on this heavily trafficked road,\u201d the senator stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statements by the Azua deputy were backed by the Peravia (Bani) province senator. Julito Fulcar, who is the spokesperson for the ruling PRM in the Chamber of Deputies, called for the directors of the National Police, the National Transport and Transit Institute (Intrant) and the Ground Transit and Transport Agency (Digesett) to take drastic measures with the racing motorists. He concurs these are putting their lives at risk and are causing traffic accidents that have left hundreds injured or dead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fulcar said a cartel has taken ownership of the roads and manages millions in bets for the races. He said the racing motorcyclists are employees of the cartels that operate on the Azua-Bani and San Cristobal highways, while law enforcement agents have for years looked the other way. He urged commuters to take special care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
