President Luis Abinader said during his weekly press conference on 14 July 2025 that the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Public Works are working on a final opinion on the use of land of the Botanical Gardens for the expansion of the Avenida Republica de Colombia. The rumored project is contested by those who say the Botanical Gardens need to be protected given the consistent reduction of green areas in the capital city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legislator Tobias Crespo (of the opposition political party Fuerza del Pueblo) recalls that Miguel Ceara Hatton, who preceded Paino Henriquez as Minister of Environment, had sent a formal document to the Chamber of Deputies\u2019 Environmental Committee with a copy to Vice President Raquel Pe\u00f1a where he stated the Botanical Gardens and its perimetral areas need to be preserved above all other situations. The opinion was based on technical studies by experts at the Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
