Contrary to claims made by the defense, 30-year old Jean Andr\u00e9s Pumarol Fern\u00e1ndez, accused of a violent attack on neighbors in the Naco sector of the National District, will not be housed in a psychiatric ward at the Anamuya prison in La Altagracia province, as reported in CDN. The General Penitentiary and Correctional Services Agency (DGSPC) has directly refuted assertions that the Anamuya facility possesses a specialized mental health unit. During the attack, a 70-year old woman was killed, and four other persons are injured, including his own father. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard Mart\u00ednez, Pumarol’s lawyer, had stated his client was sent to Anamuya because, he alleged, it had a specialized unit for mentally ill patients. Mart\u00ednez argued that this precautionary measure indirectly acknowledged the paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis his defense team presented for Pumarol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the DGSPC clarified to CDN that only five correctional centers nationwide are equipped with areas for inmates with mental health disorders: Najayo Hombres, Najayo Mujeres, La Victoria, San Pedro de Macor\u00eds, and El Pinito in La Vega. Anamuya is not on this list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judge Rigoberto Sena previously ordered three months of preventive detention for Pumarol. The judge dismissed the medical reports submitted by the defense because they were not issued by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF). In his decision, Sena also weighed the severe nature of the alleged crimes, the safety of the victims, and the imperative to ensure the judicial process proceeds without impediment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
