President Luis Abinader was in Santiago for the 29 September press conference. He presented the advances of the third phase of the transformation of the Gurabo Gully (Arroyo Gurabo) in Santiago city. The President described the project as the most impactful urban work built in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some 12,000 families are positively impacted. The President said the first 1,200 families have been relocated to the Hato del Yaque government apartments complex with its community and sports center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project also encompasses the largest children\u2019s park in the Caribbean, complete with an amphitheater. A soccer field and a track for athletics, complete with Chevron track, is included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

25,000 square meters of green areas have been recovered and another 25,000 are to be recovered by the completion of the project in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanitation works have reduced 40% of the contamination of the Yaque del Norte River, the most important in the central provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President said the transformation of the slum area has also had an impact on crime. He said this was an area where the very indigent lived and the Police did not enter. Around 80 drug points were demolished in the slum area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project encompassed around 8 km of residual waters and urban renovations for 3 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also has had a major incidence in avoiding the urban flooding in Santiago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
