A security guard at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) has died from injuries sustained during a shooting on the central campus last Thursday, 16 October 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lyedgers Tameydshi Encarnaci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1a, a member of the security team, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday after being hospitalized since the incident, Diario Libre reports. The university confirmed his death, expressing “profound sadness” in a statement on its official X account, and offered condolences to his family and the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gunfire happened on Thursday afternoon following an earlier conflict between a student and security personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alleged shooter, Alexander Jim\u00e9nez Galv\u00e1n, 35, a law student also known as “Alex,” is currently facing charges of attempted homicide and illegal possession of a firearm. The Public Ministry has requested preventive detention for Jim\u00e9nez Galv\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to UASD Communications Director Roberto Tejada Mu\u00f1oz, the initial dispute occurred the night before when security agents Encarnaci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1a and Juan Manuel M\u00e9ndez found Jim\u00e9nez Galv\u00e1n parked in a restricted and poorly lit area of the campus. His documents were retained by security during the exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diario Libre reports that the situation escalated when the student returned on Thursday to retrieve his documents. University authorities allege that Jim\u00e9nez Galv\u00e1n came back accompanied by another person and had a 12-gauge shotgun in his vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After getting his documents back, the student allegedly drove to another part of the campus and opened fire, wounding both security guards.
\u2022 Encarnaci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1a suffered severe gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Dominico Cubano Medical Center, where he later died.
\u2022 Juan Manuel M\u00e9ndez was injured in the hand and required surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assailant reportedly tried to flee after the shooting but was intercepted by students who witnessed the event. He was then detained by security personnel before being handed over to the National Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
