The infrastructure projects were executed by the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (Egehid), as part of its corporate social responsibility program. EgeHid is a public-private corporation. The roads are set to impact 18,000 rural residents in the San Juan de la Maguana province.

Egehid Administrator Rafael Salazar said the new roads are a cornerstone of a broader effort to expand necessary infrastructure for the region’s productive development, which is critical for the nation’s water resources, energy supply, and agricultural output.

Salazar noted that the projects are part of the state-owned company’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program, aimed at bringing tangible solutions and development to communities near hydroelectric complexes. He also revealed that 20 additional Egehid projects are in the final stages of completion across the area.

Furthermore, the administrator announced significant educational advancements, including the securing of scholarships and authorization to elevate the academic level at the ISA University to include engineering and other higher-level degrees.

Road details and investment
The three new road segments involved substantial investment and work:
• Vallejuelo–Batista Road that cost RD$408.3 million for 10.2 km. The reconstruction, which benefits communities like Batista, Jorgillo, El Guayabo, and Sabana Grande, included grading, storm drainage, gutters, sidewalks, curbs, a bridge, asphalt paving, and signaling. It serves as a direct contribution to localities linked to the Domingo Rodríguez Hydroelectric Power Plant.

• Vallejuelo–Río Arriba Sur Road with an investment of RD$223.47 million for 4.5 km. This intervention involved constructing gabion walls for high-risk area protection, safety railings, paving, sidewalks, curbs, and robust storm drainage. The design ensures greater resilience against harsh weather and increased long-term durability.

• Los Arroyos–Sabaneta Road with a RD$55.28 million investment for 2.5 km. This stretch is expected to directly benefit the transport of agricultural products to markets, cutting travel times for producers, merchants, and families, and improving access to essential services.

In a separate but related development, President Abinader also handed over the Tenguerengue Boulevard, a project that transforms San Juan de la Maguana into a more “vibrant, inclusive, and touristic” city. Egehid contributed to the project with a 6.6-kilometer perimeter fence, sidewalks, access points, and beautification efforts, investing RD$126,791,556.90.

The boulevard, a coordinated effort with the San Juan de la Maguana city Mayor’s Office and the Governor’s Office, creates a new recreational space, improves quality of life, and enhances protection against flooding and insects originating from the Tenguerengue stream.

Read more in Spanish:
Presidency

3 November 2025

President Luis Abinader officially opened the Vallejuelo–Batista, Vallejuelo–Río Arriba Sur and Los Arroyos–Sabaneta roads on Saturday, 1 November 2025.
