European Union (EU) investment in the Dominican Republic reached \u20ac1.6 billion in 2024 alone, contributing to a massive cumulative total of \u20ac10 billion since 2020. These figures were presented by Ra\u00fal Fuentes Milani, EU Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, during his appearance at the high-level “Desayuno del List\u00edn Diario” business table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuentes Milani was joined by German ambassador Maike Friedrichsen, Italian ambassador Sergio Maffettone, Netherlands ambassador Sonia Meijer and French ambassador Eric Fournier for the talk with the editor in chief of Listin Diario Miguel Franjul and deputy editor Fabio Cabral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomats noted there has been a significant shift in the bilateral economic relationship. European investment is now diversifying far beyond the traditional tourism sector. Attracted by the country\u2019s political stability, the EU is seeing the Dominican Republic as a strategic central hub for logistics, organization, and distribution within the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A broadening economic footprint
The EU has consolidated its position as the leading foreign investor in the country, expanding into construction, energy, transport, and free zones. During the meeting, the diplomats outlined specific areas of interest that underscore this diversification:
\u2022 Italy: Ambassador-designate Sergio Maffettone says there is interest in new deals in machinery, biomedicine, and cybersecurity. \u201cBeyond tourism, we are interested in developing construction, biomedical, agriculture, machinery, space, defense, energy, and cybersecurity sectors,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Germany: Ambassador Maike Friedrichsen spoke of a focus on free zones, medical equipment machinery and renewable energy. She described the Dominican Republic as a “strategic and political partner” with shared views on multilateralism, human rights, and international law. She further emphasized the country’s role as the “logistics hub of the region and the gateway to the Caribbean.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 France: Investment remains strong in the fuel sector, airports, and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomats observed that the European presence extends into the social and cultural fabric of the nation. They highlighted multiple programs designed to incentivize the arts and the teaching of Romance languages through workshops and courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also mentioned that security remains a pillar of the bilateral relationship. The EU bloc shares concerns similar to those of the United States regarding illicit activities, with a specific focus on drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and money laundering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diplomats confirmed they maintain continuous communication with the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD). Furthermore, they utilize the Action to Fight Organized Crime in the Caribbean (ALCORCA) program to foster police and judicial cooperation between Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe to dismantle criminal networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ambassadors see as positive the implementing of the upgrade in the Dominican passport to make this a more trustworthy international travel document. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
