Deeply rooted in local identity, the annual spectacle draws hundreds of visitors attracted by a unique blend of historical legacy, religious fervor, and popular entertainment, Diario Libre reports.

The festivities are held in honor of the Santísima Cruz (Holy Cross), the central figure of the province’s patron saint celebrations. The inaugural events commence at 2pm with a ceremony to officially unveil the name of the Plaza de Toros y Multiuso Eduardo Lima. Following cultural presentations, the bullfights (locally known as corridas) begins at 4pm.

Luis Graverley, a member of the Hermandad de Fervorosos (the organization coordinating the patronal festivities), told Diario Libre that the event is designed to be accessible to the community. Ticket prices are set at RD$50 for children, RD$100 for adults and RD$300 for the VIP area.

The bullfights are scheduled to run for approximately nine days. However, activities will pause on 3 May 2026 to observe the Día de la Santísima Cruz, the primary focus of the province’s religious calendar.

A century of tradition
The bullfights in El Seibo represent a century-old tradition that distinguishes the province within the Dominican cultural landscape. Unlike Spanish-style bullfighting, the Seibo tradition focuses on the festive, community-driven atmosphere where local “improvised” bullfighters take center stage. Historically, the animals are not killed in the ring, emphasizing the event as a display of skill and bravery rather than a blood sport.

For decades, these events were held in artisanal rings constructed of wooden planks and precarious structures. The transition to the Eduardo Lima multipurpose plaza marks a significant upgrade in safety and infrastructure for a tradition that serves as a vital social hub where local faith, music, and gastronomy converge.

Read more in Spanish:
Diario Libre

30 April 2026

The province of El Seibo officially begins its traditional bullfights this Friday, 1 May 2026, marking the start of one of the most culturally significant events in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic.
