The Presidency has announced a series of drastic measures aimed at saving RD$40 billion through spending cuts. This includes significant restrictions on government advertising, travel stipends, vehicle purchases, and travel abroad. The move comes as the fuel subsidy budget for the entire year was exhausted in just four months due to the global energy crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somber-faced, high-ranking executives of the Abinader administration faced reporters late last week to announce the measures to be taken by the government to deal with the current crisis caused by large spikes in oil prices and unrest in the oil-futures market. The general director for the National Budget, Jose Rijo Presbot told reporters that the aim of the measures is to provide the government with RD$40 billion in funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government Council, headed by President Luis Abinader, started off by cutting the subsidies to the political parties by 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan is to also reduce operating expenses, the purchase of vehicles for government use and a rationalization of services. The administration will also cut costs of \u201cevents\u201d (inaugurations and such), as well as per diems, airfares, fuel cards, and government advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The officials also announced a reduction of payments to government entities with the capacity to generate their own cash flow. Everything under a contract will be honored, of course, said National Budget director Jose Rijo Presbot. He said budget items that have yet to be disbursed will be subject to revision. Saying that these steps were a temporary necessity, the budget boss added that they were being taken to preserve macroeconomic stability and ensure sufficient resources to protect the more vulnerable sectors of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister of Hacienda and Economy Magin Diaz told reporters that the economy was \u201cbasically sound.\u201d He said that the increase in the price of crude oil was a hard blow and the government is focusing on three objectives: macro-economic stability, reducing the impact of food prices and the basic consumer items, and maintaining public investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, consumers are feeling the brunt of the Iran conflict in higher fuel prices. With the RD$12 billion fuel subsidy fund now empty, the government is passing costs to consumers. Gasoline and diesel prices have risen between RD$7 and RD$9 per gallon, sparking concerns over rising inflation in the transport and logistics sectors. Regular gasoline now costs more than RD$300 the gallon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
