The number of Haitians in the Dominican Republic has climbed to at least a million after last January’s earthquake that destroyed most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and killed 300,000 people, injuring at least that many more and leaving 1.2 million people homeless, according to “official figures from the Haitian government”. Migration Department chief Sigfrido Pared Perez said that “to say that the Haitian presence in the Dominican Republic has not increased since the earthquake is to try and deny reality”.
