Reportedly, the public cancer center, the Heriberto Pieter Oncology Center receives 12,000 new cases a year. The mortality rate for cancer patients at the hospital is 40%. 50% of cases are diagnosed in an advanced state, which increases the mortality rate. Leukemia is now treated at the Onco-Hematology Unit at the Plaza de la Salud General Hospital that has carried out 28 bone marrow transplants.<\/p>\n<p> The newspaper also highlights the high cost of treatment that is estimated to cost RD$1.5 million in the first year. To treat leukemia patients, the cost is RD$350,000 a year. Reportedly, the Robert Reid Cabral Children&#8217;s Hospital receives 90 new cases of children with cancer every year, of which 35% are leukemia. The survival rate is 75%. A Foundation was created to fund cancer treatments for disadvantaged children.
