Some 2,368,000 tareas (1 tarea = 628 square meters) are dedicated to farming 14 products using organic methods. The Ministry of Agriculture has a registry of 23,360 small, medium and large certified organic producers. Organic farming has grown at a 25-30% annual rate, especially in the areas of cacao, and bananas. There are 1,728,000 tareas of cacao organic plantations and 300,000 of banana plantations. Organic cacao exports are worth US$110 million and organic banana exports are at US$74 million. In the DR, the certification companies are n BCS Dominicana, IMO Caribe, Suolo and Salutte and Skal Control. <\/p>\n<p> The main organic farming areas are the south, central and northwestern regions.<\/p>\n<p> South: Barahona, Pedernales, San Juan, Azua, San Cristobal, Bani, where mango, coffee and banana and noni are produced.<\/p>\n<p> Central Cibao: La Vega, Duarte, Hermanas Mirabal and Maria Trinidad Sanchez with cacao, coffee, limes, coconuts and avocado cultivation, as well as oranges and vegetables in Moca and La Vega. <\/p>\n<p> Northwest: Valverde, Santiago Rodriguez, Montecristi and Dajabon produce bananas and coffee.<\/p>\n<p> There is also organic production in the north with coffee, limes and avocado. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A report in today&#8217;s Hoy newspaper focuses on the Dominican Republic&#8217;s US$200 million a year in organic exports.
