According to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Relations, this vote is a demonstration of the leading role the country has taken on economic issues on the international scene. This election was made possible by the “generous gesture made by Colombia that ceded its turn in exchange for its entry in 2013 which was originally going to be used by the Dominican Republic,” says Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, as quoted in the press release.
