They are already famous in the DR for being the voices of the catchy Coca Cola anniversary advertisement. Now, coinciding with its director Dominican-American Francisco J. Nunez being named a MacArthur Fellow (US$500,000 Genius Grant award), the Young People’s Chorus of New York City will be on stage in at the National Theater in Santo Domingo this Thursday, 27 October at 8:30pm. <\/p>\n
This is the first event in the Uno a Uno program, a national, non-governmental Dominican initiative to build a community of diverse economic populations. The Young People’s Chorus of New York City is regarded as an inspirational model of diversity and artistic excellence. <\/p>\n
A special highlight of the program will be El Coro Capotillo’s professional stage debut, singing “Cantamos Uno a Uno,” which Nunez has written specifically for this occasion.<\/p>\n
Nunez is working with Jose Santana, President Leonel Fernandez’s special advisor and ambassador, to create a national children’s chorus based on the inclusive YPC model, Coro de Jovenes de Santo Domingo (Young People’s Chorus of Santo Domingo). The plan is to draw together children from Dominican communities, rich and poor. <\/p>\n
Guest artists at the “Oye Mi Voz” concert by the children from New York include legendary Cuban artist\/composer Paquito D’Rivera and the newly formed El Coro Capotillo, from the Santo Domingo slum. <\/p>\n
El Coro Capotillo, made up of children from one of the most impoverished and dangerous areas of the country, is the first of five children’s choruses to be established from different parts of the Dominican Republic over the next two years, all of which will come together as Coro de Jovenes de Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n
The 27 October concert will include a wonderful mixture of Latino favorites, music from other lands, including gospel spirituals from the US, and the opportunity to sing along. <\/p>\n
