The Superintendent of Power, Julio Cross, announced yesterday afternoon that his office had not been able to reach an agreement with the electric generators and distributors to soften the proposed 20-percent rate increase scheduled for March. Instead, Cross said, his office is working on the factors that affect the indexes used to adjust the electricity rates and he felt confident that the 20-percent increase would not go into effect.

Rolando Gonzalez Bunster, spokesman for the Haina generation park, told reporters that the power generators had been subsidizing the energy sector for years. ?The Dominican people have to realize that you can?t cover the sun with one finger, and if the rates are going to rise, it is for totally external reasons, regardless of what the government wants,? he said to defend the forthcoming adjustments.
