The Minister for Economy, Planning and Development, Temistocles Montas, announced that there would be a reduction in the diplomatic and consular staff this month in order to decrease public spending. For many years, news reports have pointing to hundreds of political appointments in foreign missions, including people who are appointed to foreign embassies but spend most of their time in the Dominican Republic. Many embassies have more staff appointed than they have space. <\/p>\n
Following a meeting with President Danilo Medina and a delegation from the United Nations Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti (MINUSTAH), the Minister of Foreign Relations, Carlos Morales Troncoso said that he is in favor of the measure. Morales Troncoso has continued in his post after eight years in the post under the past government of President Leonel Fernandez. <\/p>\n
Montas said that the government is going to reduce expenses by between RD$55 and RD$60 billion, which is around 2.3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). <\/p>\n
