Based on data from the 2010 Census, the National Statistical Office (ONE) has revealed that 1,105,643 people over the age of six cannot read or write. This is about 13% of the Dominican Republic’s population. In the 2002 Census, the percentage of people who were illiterate was placed at 16%. The province of Pedernales has the largest percentage of illiteracy at 29%, followed by Elias Pina at 20%. Both of these provinces border with Haiti. The provinces with the lowest illiteracy rates are the National District, with 8.8%, followed by Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana and Santiago. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
