A new study reveals that 87% of Haitians working in the country do so without legal status. The research paper, Status and Contributions of Haitian Labor to the Dominican Economy, was produced by the Centro de Formacion y Accion Social y Agraria (CEFASA) directed by economist Agustin Gonzalez. <\/p>\n
The study says that the only sector that has made efforts to regularize the contracting of Haitian labor is the banana industry, where 40% of the Haitian laborers are legal. The reasons behind this are labor requirements of the European Union, the main buyer of banana exports.<\/p>\n
The study also showed that 69% of the Haitian laborers are temporary workers, while only 31% has permanent work contracts. In the banana industry, 85% of the workers employed have permanent contracts. <\/p>\n
The study showed that in the construction industry, 88% of Haitian laborers are temporary workers. The researchers say that the investigation showed that almost all Haitian workers live in the DR but go from temporary to temporary job. <\/p>\n
