The construction of the Cibao-Sur highway from the north of San Juan de la Maguana province to Santiago would cause irreparable damage to the country’s watersheds which have their source in the Central Mountain region. Jose Manuel Mateo, director of the Biodiversity and Wildlife Department at the Ministry of the Environment, called on the government to find an alternative route for this important project. He told Hoy reporter Cynthia Abreu that “we are not opposed to the construction of the highway. What we are suggesting is that they find another area that in no way affects the Jose del Carmen Ramirez or the Jose Armando Bermudez parks.” He said that the potential threat to the watershed in the area outweighed the advantages of the highway.
