Kennedy Jr. warned Dominicans that mining companies make many promises but rarely keep them. He advised the government to introduce very strong legislation to oblige these companies to restore the lands after mining. He said that in most cases the companies promise they will restore the lands, but do not keep their promises. &#8220;It is a dirty industry, very dirty&#8221;. He said, raising red flags about the use of mercury and cyanide in ore extraction. <\/p>\n<p> He also criticized the Medina administration for passing tax legislation that significantly reduced incentives for solar and wind energy in the country. He said the Caribbean should concentrate on developing these forms of energy.<\/p>\n<p> He criticized President Medina for backing coal-fired generators instead of renewable methods. Kennedy described coal as a dirty fuel and a threat to public health, pointing out that the country would be dependent on imports to fire the generators. He said that the obvious alternatives for the DR were solar and wind power. He said that investing in those energy sources means creating an industry that will produce quality jobs and is long term. Kennedy works with solar energy companies, but said that incentives were needed for them to invest in the country.
