Dominican jockey Joel Rosario led three-year old colt Orb to win his first Kentucky Derby on Sunday, 5 May in rainy, muddy conditions. The 1?-mile Kentucky Derby is regarded as one of the world’s most famous horse races. <\/p>\n
A product of the Dominican horseracing system, after four years competing at the Santo Domingo horse race track, Rosario moved to the US in 2006. He already won this year’s US$10 million Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest race, on Animal Kingdom. He is also dominating the Southern California circuit, where he has won riding titles at Del Mar, Santa Anita and Hollywood Park. <\/p>\n
President Danilo Medina congratulated Rosario for Saturday’s victory. Medina expressed his pride and admiration for the feat “because we know of the sacrifices and effort that it takes to be among the most outstanding jockeys in the world.” Rosario now hopes to guide Orb through a run for the Triple Crown for which he needs to win the Preakness (Maryland) and Belmont Stakes (New York). The last Triple Crown was won in 1978.<\/p>\n
The son of champions Malibu Moon and Lady Liberty, racehorse Orb is owned by Stuart Janney and Dinny Phipps from one of the leading racing families in the US. <\/p>\n
As reported, Kentucky-born Shug McGaughey, Orb’s 62-year old trainer, had won most of America’s major races but the Kentucky Derby, with prize money of US$1,425,000 had eluded him until now.<\/p>\n
