Medical consulting services and elective surgeries were paralyzed in all of the hospitals in Santo Domingo yesterday, Monday 27 May, as the doctors, nurses, bio-analysts, pharmacists and other health workers went on strike for 12 hours, in response to a call made by health workers’ unions. <\/p>\n
They are calling for a salary increase, payment of all pensions, improved travel and overtime incentives and better distribution of health insurance services.<\/p>\n
A similar strike will be held in the north of the country today, Tuesday 28 May, followed by the south on Wednesday 29 May. <\/p>\n
During an interview with the media at the children’s hospital, Dominican Medical Association (CMD) president Amarilis Herrera said there was 100% support for the strike and that only they would only be treating emergencies. In the meantime, patients arriving for their hospital appointments were forced to reschedule. <\/p>\n
