The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Jose del Castillo Savinon has told the press that the Dominican government is expecting the Haitian government to lift the ban on the import of poultry products today, Thursday 13 June so that business can return to normal. <\/p>\n
Poultry producers say that every week the border is closed to poultry exports costs producers have to find alternative markets for 4.9 million eggs, 750,000 lbs of poultry and one million pounds of salami, worth around RD$68.4 million. <\/p>\n
Castillo traveled to Haiti yesterday Wednesday 12 June as part of a delegation to discuss the ban with the Haitian authorities. Minister of Agriculture Luis Ramon Rodriguez and Minister of Public Health Freddy Hidalgo, director of CEI-RD Jean Alain Rodriguez were also on the mission.<\/p>\n
Castillo told reporters that they explained the reality of the health situation in the Dominican Republic, that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has certified the country is free from avian flu. He said that the Haitian ministers confirmed they would advise the Council of Ministers to resume poultry imports to their country.<\/p>\n
At the end of the meeting, it was also agreed that there would be a meeting between specialists from both countries’ Animal Health departments next week in Santo Domingo, to draw up procedures for regulating the business of poultry sales, so that this type of situation does not happen again. <\/p>\n
Claudio Acosta writes in his Que Se Dice Column in Hoy that what few know is that the government of Haiti never lifted the import on Dominican poultry goods levied in 2008. What happened is that informal exports continued and everyone seemed to forget about the ban, he explains. He said the new ban just confirms the old ban. <\/p>\n
