President Danilo Medina, accompanied by Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo began the construction of what will become the Santo Domingo Bypass or Beltway yesterday, Tuesday 18 June. The first phase of the new avenue, costing an estimated US$95 million, will be constructed by Consorcio Compreica-Alba Sanchez, represented at the ceremony by engineer Hector Then. <\/p>\n
The new roadway will link the Port of Haina with the Mella Highway at the Boca Chica intersection, bypassing Santo Domingo, to Km 23 of the Duarte Highway. The journey will take an estimated 75 minutes, leading to fuel savings and environmental benefits. <\/p>\n
Castillo said that the first stage would be finished by December 2014, serving the communities of Haina, El Cajuilito, Monte Adentro, La Pared, Palave, Caballona, Lecheria, Hato Nuevo and Pedro Brand. The second phase will link the Duarte Highway with Boca Chica. <\/p>\n
Some reports have put the budget for the completed highway as high as US$325 million.<\/p>\n
The second phase linking the Duarte Highway with Boca Chica would be completed in February 2016. <\/p>\n
Castillo said that once the highway is ready, around 30,000 vehicles would use the road, in addition to 320,000 commuters per day. <\/p>\n
