Trade unions are estimating the number of jobs lost since August 2000 at 600,000. May Day this year marks a difficult time for Dominican workers, due to the number of firms going out of business, high inflation and the noticeable reduction in the quality of life. The purchasing power of a Dominican salary has been cut by 23-50%, according to Rafael Abreu, vice-president of CNUS, the National Trade Unions Council.
