The Unique Beneficiary System (SIUBEN) has warned that lack of decent sanitation is a source of infection and illnesses for the population, especially children.<\/p>\n
The study shows that 62% of homes in the country share latrines, and 38% of toilets are connected to a septic tank or sewer that increases the risk of contracting contagious or gastrointestinal diseases.<\/p>\n
8.3% of residents in the metropolitan areas do not have adequate sanitation, and this figure increases to 31.7% for urban areas and 59.9% for rural areas. 10.4% of homes in the metropolitan areas use latrines, 38.6% in urban areas and 51% in rural areas. There are toilets in 41.2% of homes in metropolitan areas, in 42.7% of homes in urban areas, but only in 16% of homes in rural areas. <\/p>\n
