Despite the fact that UN representative in the DR, Lorenzo Jimenez de Luis has said that the decision of the Constitutional Court 168-13 is a closed issue, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a press statement yesterday, Thursday 5 December urging the government “to rapidly take steps to restore the nationality of individuals affected by a ruling of the Constitutional Court, which deprives tens of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent of their nationality, rendering them stateless.” <\/p>\n
The government has established that around 24,000 people who had acquired Dominican nationality irregularly would need to apply for naturalization. In the meantime, those that qualify will be fast-tracked for residency. <\/p>\n
