The Dominican Association of Teachers is on strike today in the National District and Santiago, demanding back pay owed to teachers across the country and a pay raise in next year’s budget. A report in Listín Diario says the work stoppage will give more than half a million students a day off. The union had originally planned a two day strike for today and tomorrow, but reduced it to a 24-hour strike when the Education Minister sent the union a supportive message. In her communication, Milagros Ortiz Bosch proposed the creation of a committee made up of representatives from both sides to examine the complaints and look for a solution.
