The Armed Forces has announced the creation of the Voluntary Military Service (SMV) which will begin operations January 7, 2002. The service is intended for young people from 16 to 25 years of age and is mandatory for those planning a military career or hoping to enter state security services. Three-month training camps will take place in eight centers throughout the country, including Constanza, Barahona, and Mao as well as the Sans Soucí naval base and the Air Commands in Puerto Plata and the National District. Each member of the SMV will earn the same salary as an Armed Forces conscript, about RD$2000 a month, and can opt for a career in the military after their training. Armed Forces Minister Lieutenant General José Miguel Soto Jiménez said one of the main objectives of the SMV will be to encourage the participants to continue their education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
