Dominican performers dominated in the Best Merengue Album category with: Eddy Herrera (Me Enamoré), Chichi Peralta (De Vuelta al Barrio) and Toño Rosario (Yo Soy Toño). In the Best Tropical Song category, Toño Rosario was also nominated for his Yo me Muero por Ella. In the first Grammy Awards ceremony last year, Juan Luis Guerra won in the merengue category with his Ni es lo Mismo, Ni es Igual.
