President-elect Hipólito Mejía said he would continue the fiscal policy, international relations, consolidation of the climate of democracy and liberty in the country that he inherits from the Leonel Fernández government. Speaking on the Gordo de la Semana Sunday variety show, he criticized the Fernández administration for not combatting corruption in government, and vowed to do differently. "He who does not understand what is to be honest and manage a country in an honest way should not come to work with us. I am not going to accept that. I am not going to allow that a group take the country with its hands; that is not possible. This is going to change," he said on TV interview on the Gordo de la Semana program. He was referring to the laissez affaire attitude of the present government regarding corruption cases that have made headlines in the local press. The Fernández government created a Department for the Prevention of Corruption, but its director resigned citing lack of government support, leaving behind 200 cases of alleged corruption while in office. Furthermore, Hipólito Mejía announced he would make trips to the US, Europe, Haiti, Asia, Caribbean, Central and South America, some prior to taking office. He stressed, though, that he would not travel as much as President Fernández did.
