Chief of the Police, Major General Pedro de Jesús Candelier said yesterday that he is optimistic that the new government will support his carrying out a real reform of the Police force. He said he did not find support in the previous administration. Political commentator, Aristofanes Urbáez writing in El Siglo, mocks Candelier’s comments. Urbáez wonders how Candelier can speak up that way recalling the many headlines he made with speeches in praise of support from the Fernández administration. The political commentator also recalls the battle of former Justice Reform Commissioner, Aura Celeste Fernández whom until the end of her term in government pointed out that Candelier was not supporting necessary reforms within the Police. Candelier was optimistic that the law that provides the framework for the force and the Código de Justicia Policial would now be reformed. He also said he would accept a decision of the Supreme Court of Justice that would establish that police courts violate the Constitution. Former district attorney Francisco Domínguez Brito is preparing a bill to outlaw the judging of police agent crimes by that institution.
