Three days after returning from his visit to New York City for the Summit of the Millennium, President Mejia will travel to Central American for meetings with heads of state. President Mejía will be in Costa Rica on Tuesday, 12 September for a meeting with Central American heads of state. The heads of state of the Central American Common Market, Belize and the DR will meet with Mexican President-elect Vicente Fox in San José, Costa Rica. On 13 September, President Mejía will travel to Nicaragua, accepting an invitation made by the President of Nicaragua, Arnaldo Alemán. He will return to the DR on the same day. The Dominican Republic signed a Free Trade Agreement with Central America in 1999, but the treaty is not in effect because it lacks congressional approval. President Mejía told journalists that he favors the passing of this agreement and that signed with the Caribbean.
