The official Dominican delegation to the Sydney Olympic Games leaves today. The DR will compete in five sports — judo, boxing, track & field, weightlifting and swimming. Jovanny Lorenzo (147 lbs.) Juan Jose Ubaldo Cabrera (156 lbs.) Roque Napoleón Muñoz will be accompanying the delegation invited by the International Olympic Committee. Bienvenido Solano, president of the Dominican Boxing Federation will be traveling as a member of the boxing arbitrage committee. News reports mention that Carlos José Cordero and Nathali Sallent have been invited to participate in the delegation as special guests. The Dominican Republic first participated in an Olympic Games in 1964, when runner Alberto Torres represented it. At the time, Torres traveled to Japan with Juan Ulises García Saleta (Wiche), as delegate. The late Pedro Julio Nolasco is the only Dominican to have won an Olympic medal.
