Following the detention of former Minister of Public Works Diandino Peña, former President Leonel Fernández announced he would today go before the Attorney General to set up as a prisoner. Fernández told the press that he is one of the strongest opponents to corruption in government, but that the arrests that had been carried out sought to disable him politically and annihilate the PLD, that is the leading opposition force at the time. Fernández, who was constitutionally banned from seeking re-elected in 2000, has announced his intention to seek the presidency in 2004. The Listín Diario newspaper reports that Fernández said he would visit the office of Attorney General Virgilio Bello Rosa this morning, accompanied by former Vice President Jaime David Fernández Mirabal and the former presidential candidate of the PLD, Danilo Medina.
