The Central Romana Corporation, owners of the Casa de Campo resort complex in La Romana, built the new airport at a cost of about US$55 million. The airport is able to handle 300,000 tourists per year. It is near the Casa de Campo resort as well as to resorts located in the Bayahibe\/Dominicus area. It also seeks to attract traffic of residents in Hig&uuml;ey and La Romana.  The new airport has a 2,950 meter\/45 meter wide runway, fit for the landing of almost all kinds of aircraft.
