Santo Domingo&#8217;s international airport will be known as Aeropuerto Internacional de las Am&eacute;ricas Dr. Jos&eacute; Francisco Pe&ntilde;a G&oacute;mez once President Hip&oacute;lito Mej&iacute;a signs the bill. When in government,former President Leonel Fern&aacute;ndez had vetoed a bill that changed the name of the airport to that of Aeropuerto Internacional Dr. Jos&eacute; Francisco Pe&ntilde;a G&oacute;mez when the majority PRD Congress during his government passed the bill. Fern&aacute;ndez, with the support of former President Balaguer, defeated Pe&ntilde;a G&oacute;mez in the 1996 election.
