The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Center for Disease Control of the
\nUnited States no longer recommend the use of anti-malarial medication for
\ntravellers to resort destinations in the eastern province of La Altagracia
\n(Punta Cana-Bavaro). The recommendation had been instated in November after 21
\nvisitors from Canada, the US and Europe were affected. The last reported case
\noccurred in early January.
\nThe PHAC and CDC worked closely with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
\nand the Ministry of Public Health of the DR to assess the situation and measures
\nimplemented by the local health authorities that have been effective in
\ncontrolling the outbreak, concluding in the rescinding of the anti-malarial
\nmedication recommendation.
\nFor travelers to tourist resort areas, the use of personal insect protective
\nmeasures against mosquito bites is still recommended. <\/p>\n
