There have been 117 femicides so far this year (to 20 July 2014) according to the Minister of Women, Alejandrina German. This is a 54% increase compared to the same period last year. She described the situation as “an epidemic” despite all efforts by the Ministry and other institutions over the last 10 years. <\/p>\n
She went on to say there were more femicides than deaths from dengue fever, cholera or chikungunya and attributed the increase in numbers was due to violence, crime and hit-men. <\/p>\n
German was speaking during a meeting of the National Commission for the Prevention and Fight against Domestic Violence (CONAPLUVI), held yesterday, Thursday 24 July 2014, which was also attended by Women’s Prosecutor <\/p>\n
