As part of the commemorations of World Hepatitis Day yesterday Monday 28 July 2014, the Public Health Ministry announced plans to invest RD$300 million a year for people with hepatitis who seek treatment through the public hospital system.<\/p>\n
Program director Sandra Fermin said that the treatment would cover 100% or around 500 patients each year with Hepatitis B and C.<\/p>\n
Fermin said that anyone whose socio-economic situation met the requirements should subscribe to the “Liver” Program where they would be monitored by professionals on the Liver Committee. <\/p>\n
She said that the program would run in five public hospitals – Cabral y Baez in Santiago, Padre Billini, Moscoso Puello, the Dominican Social Security Institute and Marcelino Velez Santana.<\/p>\n
She said that she believed that the new treatments available mean that hepatitis C would soon become a thing of the past. Fermin added that there are now fewer hepatitis cases and that the mortality rate was much lower due to early detection. <\/p>\n
