Leonel’s 65% versus Hipolito’s 13% demonstrates the public’s rejection of the current government and the economic situation. “The public does not forgive the loss of its purchasing power nor the deterioration of state institutions: Mejia is as much a victim of a protest vote as Leonel is its beneficiary.” Lora quotes Hoy journalist Noris Sanchez, who pronounced that what some former PRD voters will never forgive Mejia for is the fact that “he forced them to vote for Fernandez.” As in so many previous elections, Dominicans will vote for the candidate they dislike least, rather than a candidate they support.
