The above-the-fold story tells of airplane insurers who will not cover damage or losses caused by birds at the new La Isabela recently renamed Joaquin Balaguer International Airport. Consequently, the planes and helicopters at Herrera have nowhere to go. There isn?t enough space at the Las Americas International Airport and they are not allowed to fly into the new Joaquin Balaguer airport in El Higuero because of the numerous cattle egrets that populate the area. The problem was reaffirmed yesterday by a technician from the Airport Authority who requested his name not be revealed, as a group of reporters and authorities toured the areas as part of the ongoing inquiry regarding the imminent closure of Herrera?s facilities in 60 days. The technician said that the problem is threefold, after hearing the statement released by spokespersons from Aerodom, the operator of Las Americas and La Isabela ? Joaquin Balaguer Airport in the DR. They reported that Las Americas, located in Punta Caucedo, does not have enough space available, and even if space were to be found, all international flights now arriving and departing from AILA would have to be rescheduled to make room for the additional flights. Finally, the aircraft cannot land at La Isabela because the re-insurers have warned of the danger of the birds obstructing the flight paths. The FAA has estimated as many as 10,000 birds in the area.
