Director general of Passports Iris Guaba says that around 20 cases of passport fraud were detected in the first quarter of 2015, a reduction on previous years. <\/p>\n
She said that document forgery had been reduced by around 300% as in 2103 they prosecuted almost 100 cases. <\/p>\n
She pointed out that the first three months of the year are usually the worst, as January is historically the biggest month in terms of demand for passports. <\/p>\n
She attributed the decline to better controls, including document verification by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and document checks by the Ministry of Interior and Police for people becoming citizens.<\/p>\n
Guaba was interviewed during the Bilateral Dominican Republic and Haiti Meeting, “Examining Travel Documents and Prevention of Fraud,” which started yesterday, Monday 23 March and continues until Friday 27 March 2015. The meeting is sponsored by the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) and the Organization of American States (OAS). <\/p>\n
